Chapter Twenty-Seven

Knots

Inspecting the angler’s knot with an approving nod, Dr. Wolf congratulated Amia. “Well done. Now tell me, what are your thoughts after this exercise?”

Amia sat back and thought. What was the point? Was it about perspective and learning? They had discussed her teaching tai chi to the others in the program, her dream, and passing the information along to Detective Johnson. Amia guessed, “We learn in different ways. Building associations helps us understand the unknown?” Amia knew she’d ended the statement as a question.

Instead of answering, Dr. Wolf nodded thoughtfully.

The silence encouraged Amia to continue. “Associations are important. It was easier to complete the knot after receiving both verbal and visual cues.” Amia thought for a quiet moment. Maybe the lesson was less about the knot and more about the exercise. Amia smiled at Dr. Wolf as a realization settled out of the mist inside her head. “You reframed my fears with knot tying.” Her tone lifted with her smile. “You used R-F-T on me.”

Smirking, Dr. Wolf cocked her head. “Did I? I don’t remember using any theory. Does it matter? Did the point get across? Was there another point being made at the same time? What do you think?”

Amia thought of the feelings she had shared about Daizon. She replied, “I believe it was an open-ended question intended to stir thought and make multiple points. It was as much about the experience as the task.” Amia delighted in the realizations. One of those realizations being that her memory was returning. It might not be as quickly as she would like, but it was returning, and it filled her with energy. Her hand gestures quickened. “The experience of interaction is as vital to improving well-being as is the actual knowledge of how to improve. Some might even say that the experience of positive interaction and group inclusion might influence well-being more so than being totally adept at a task.”

Amia scanned the room with what seemed fresh eyes. It was a comfortable space that displayed professionalism and openness. Dr. Wolf designed it that way to instill ease and nurture conversation with clients. The books projected an image of Dr. Wolf being well read in a wide variety of subjects. Her economy of movement and mannerisms conveyed someone deeply aware of the human condition and her ability to communicate in multiple ways. At that moment, Amia was the center of this woman’s attention. Amia said, “I think you are very good at what you do. I’m lucky that I’m here with you at this place. I think I would enjoy teaching the group what I know of tai chi, even if I’m not exactly a master of the art. In the time we have, it will be the basics. Not everyone will want to join the group.”

Dr. Wolf said, “I’m the lucky one, Amia. Thank you for the kind words. As for the group, we’ll offer access as an open invitation. Would you prefer teaching before our morning mindfulness and compassion
